If you are downsizing from your home to an apartment building or a smaller house, there are a few important steps you'll need to take before a moving company can move your furniture, appliances, and personal belongings to your new home. Here's what you need to do.

Make Sure Everything Will Fit

You likely already envisioned your furniture in your new home in the apartment building and have ideas on where each piece will go. But, did you envision actually physically moving the furniture through all the doorways, stairwells, and hallways? If you're moving to an apartment building, you'll want to make sure that your moving company will be able to move the furniture through the common areas as well as through your apartment.

Take measurements of your furniture as well as of the various places in the apartment and in the common areas. If there are places where you believe the movers will have difficulty, cut up and shape cardboard boxes to replicate the questionable pieces of furniture. Then, take the replications to your new home for a trial run to determine whether or not the furniture will be possible for the movers to complete the move of your larger and awkwardly shaped items.

Prepare Items Before Movers Arrive

When moving day comes and your movers arrive to start putting your things into the moving truck, you'll want to be ready for them by having your things boxed up and your larger items prepared and ready to go. Many people don't realize the amount of work there is to do when it comes to preparing large items such as appliances, equipment, and furniture. Here are a few things to consider:

  • refrigerator and freezer. Unplug and clean out the refrigerator. If your refrigerator has a water line, don't forget to have it disconnected and drained prior to the move. You may need to hire a plumber to do this for you.
  • fuel-operated equipment. Whether you have a lawnmower, a propane BBQ grill, or a gas stove, you'll need to make sure equipment is properly disconnected and prepared for the move.
  • large furniture. Be sure to know if your moving company will disassemble your large pieces of furniture or if you will need to do this yourself before the movers arrive.

It's important to understand that due to liability insurance requirements, your moving company may not be able to perform these additional tasks. Therefore, you'll want to be sure to have them give you a list of what needs to be accomplished prior to their arrival on moving day.
